Direction of Trade Statistics (DOTS) is accessible from the IMF e-LIBRARY.
World and area tables present (1) world aggregates comprising all countries, including about 26 small countries for which individual country tables are not presented in the quarterly issues, (2) industrial country aggregates derived from the figures for the 23 countries classified as industrial countries, (3) developing countries aggregates and subgroups, namely, Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, and Western Hemisphere, and (4) European Union aggregates.
The Direction of Trade Statistics (DOTS) Historical database on CD-ROM presents figures from 1948 to 1980.
No comprehensive estimation methods were used for the periods before 1981. In addition, the coverage of countries was different as explained in detail in A Guide to the Direction of Trade Statistics (1993). Aggregates for world and areas are available, based on mainly reported data and some pproximate estimations. Therefore data prior to 1981 should be used with caution.
