Statistical software

SPSS

SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is a flexible statistical analysis program running on Windows and Mac operating systems.  The menu-driven interface makes it well suited for beginner users of statistical software programs. The program is available on all computers at the Map & Data Library computer lab and reference area. Additionally, U of T students, faculty and staff can purchase an annual license for SPSS from the Licensed Software Office (LSO) on the main floor of Robarts or directly through their website.

Stata

Stata offers a mix of entry level and advanced tools for data management, graphical and statistical procedures using command-based instructions. The program is available on all computers at the Map & Data Library computer lab and reference area. A software license can be purchased by U of T members directly and at lower rates. Faculty and staff go through the Stata Prof+ Plan. Please select your campus from the list of Ontario universities. Students go through the Student single-user purchase.

SAS

SAS is a comprehensive statistical software package that runs on Windows, Mac and UNIX systems. Although the program is generally well suited to power users, it has a point-and-click interface which makes some features more accessible to new users. The program is available on all computers at the Map & Data Library computer lab and reference area. U of T faculty, staff and students can purchase an annual license for SAS through the LSO website and receive a free e-learning course along with the package.

R

R is a freely available open source software environment for statistical analysis. The command-line driven programming language and software can be used on Windows, Mac and Unix operating systems. The program is available on all computers at the Map & Data Library computer lab and reference area.

NVivo

NVivo is a qualitative data analysis software program compatible with Mac and Windows operating systems. Users can organize, sort and code qualitative data by importing original sources in pdf, video, audio, and spreadsheets among other formats. Once the qualitative data is entered, NVivo can perform queries and model trends using graphs and other visualisations. The program is available on all computers at the Map & Data Library computer lab and reference area.  U of T students, faculty, and staff can request an NVivo license at no cost.
