Datastream

Datastream is LSEG (formerly Refinitiv)'s historical financial database with over 35 million individual instruments or indicators across all major asset classes, including 8.5 million active economic indicators. It features 120 years of data, across 175 countries.

Access to Datastream is via the LSEG Workspace platform. Sign up for a MyRefinitiv account by filling out the following form: https://my.refinitiv.com/productregistration.html. Use your U of T email address, and select the LSEG product(s) you wish to have access to. Please note that the account registration process will take 24-72 hours during the work week. Once your account has been created, you will then have 24/7 access to these LSEG products.

Please read before applying:

  • We have a limited number of accounts, so we ask you to please only register if you actively intend to use the platform for your research.
  • You must indicate whether you are applying for Datastream or SDC Platinum, or both. Failure to select either of these options means your application will not be approved.
  • Due to a consistent demand but low usage of accounts, if you are an undergraduate or master's level student, please email mhl@rotman.utoronto.ca with an explanation for your research needs for an account. This is required for account approval.
  • All undergraduate and master's level accounts will be deactivated after April 30th of each year. Users may reapply by contacting mhl@rotman.utoronto.ca

If you already have an account, log in here: https://workspace.refinitiv.com/web

LSEG Workspace is available as a desktop application, web platform, and Excel plugin. Coding (Jupyter Notebook) and API options are also available:

  • Excel plugin: this is automatically installed with the installation of the desktop application for either Mac or Windows. Note the installation version must be current (2023 or later). The Excel plugin is not available via the web platform
  • Codebook / Jupyter Notebook: Codebook consists of a hosted Jupyter Notebook server, available both via the desktop application and web platfom, which can be found by searching for "Codebook" within Workspace. Note that Codebook is configured for Python coding only, and works by making use of LSEG's APIs. The environment comes pre-loaded with sample code for various queries and results, or entire Notebooks, can be exported.
    • Note that notebooks will not work outside of this environment as-is without adding an API key
    • Please see this tutorial page for more information on working with Python or Jupyter Notebooks.
  • API access: It is possible to generate an API key within Workspace for use on your local machine. This can be done by searching for "APPKEY" and selecting "App Key Generator" from the suggested options. More information on API usage is available via LSEG's developer community.
    • In the display name field, enter a name for your app key.
    • Choose the Eikon DATA API by ticking the corresponding box.
    • Select "Register New App".
