Although the Map & Data Library is physically closed, we are still available remotely and happy to help. We can conduct consultations using online teleconferencing software. Please feel free to contact us at mdl@library.utoronto.ca or use our help form. We have a number of tutorials available, are still supplying software licenses, and have compiled a list of resources for working with COVID-19 data.

Please note that our computer lab is also accessible for use through remote access. See this link for more information.

Global 30-Arc-Second Elevation Data (GTOPO30)

GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. For easier distribution, GTOPO30 has been divided into tiles which can be selected from the map shown above. Detailed information on the characteristics of GTOPO30 including the data distribution format, the data sources, production methods, accuracy, and hints for users, is found in the GTOPO30 README file. See linked index for help in choosing an area.

GEONAME

The largest source of international feature names available. GEONAME can replace over 200 printed US Government gazetteers - based on the database of the United States Board on Geographic Names. GEONAME is a powerful tool for geo-locating named features, defining correct names in the Romanized form of the local national language, and determining the correct name as cross-referenced from variants

Landscan 2000

The LandScan data set is a worldwide population databasecompiled on a 30in X 30in latitude/longitude grid. Census counts(mainly at sub-national level) were apportioned to each gridcell based on probability coefficients, which are based onproximity to roads, slope, land cover and nighttime lights.LandScan 2000 has been developed as part of Oak RidgeNational Laboratory (ORNL) Global Population Project forestimating ambient populations at risk. The LandScan files areavailable on our ftp server in Band Interleaved by Line (BIL)format by continent and in ESRI grid format for the world

Digital Terrain Elevation Data [DTED]

In support of military applications, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) has developed standard digital datasets (Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) which is a uniform matrix of terrain elevation values which provides basic quantitative data for systems and applications that require terrain elevation, slope, and/or surface roughness information.

Digital Chart of the World

The Digital Chart of the World (DCW) is an Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) product originally developed for the US Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) using DMA data. We used the DCW 1993 version at 1:1,000,000 scale. The DMA data sources are aeronautical charts, which emphasize landmarks important from flying altitudes. This explains why there is a separate aeronautical theme with all conceivable airports, yet why on some themes small islands and lakes are simply unnamed points. ESRI, in compiling the DCW, also eliminated some detail and made some assumptions for handling tiny polygons and edgematching. Also, note that the completeness of the thematic categories present in each layer will vary. Please read the layer descriptions (through links in the following table).
